Episode 113: HULK SMASH | The Incredible Hulk, Greek Mythology, Gothic Literature & Psychology

July 21, 2019 Laurel Hostak

You wouldn’t like him when he’s angry. Yes, friends, the time has come—we’ve endeavored to analyze Iron Man, Captain America, and Thor of the MCU, but there’s a (very) large gaping hole in our exploration of the core Avengers: The Incredible Hulk. In this case study of the dual-natured hero, we’ll uncover his relationship to the Greco-Roman myths and cults of Hercules, as well as his inspiration in 19th century literature like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Robert Louis Stevenson The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde. From there, we’ll learn more about the psychology of anger and the journey we all face to confront our emotions and the Hulk inside all of us.

He comes from the land of the ice and snow, with the midnight sun, where the hot springs flow… You know where we’re going with this. The third in a series of character studies from the Marvel Cinematic Universe, we’re rounding out the core Avenger trio with everyone’s favorite god of hammers (um, we mean Thunder), THE MIGHTY THOR. From his roots in the Norse mythological tradition and rise to prominence in the era of Viking to the influence of 20th century psychology, this episode breaks apart how Marvel’s literal god character became the most down-to-earth, human Avenger. Pick up your hammer and join us in a character celebration worthy of Asgard, Midgard, and all the nine realms.

Who will campaign door to door for America? Why, the Star-Spangled Man with a plan. Our Captain America character study is here, the second in a new series of character-based podcasts from the MCU. Hot on the heels of Avengers: Endgame, Derek and Laurel analyze the long, emotional arc of a 90-year old superhero. We track his character evolution from scrappy young man to propaganda symbol to fugitive to savior in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Through comparisons to the Greek hero Perseus and the folk motif of the ‘man out of time’ as in Rip Van Winkle and the Japanese fairy tale of Urashima Taro, we get at the heart of his emotional conflict, and explore his relationship to American history and international politics. We’re with you till the end of the line.

“I am Iron Man,” declares genius billionaire, playboy, philanthropist at the end of the blockbuster movie of the same name. Our subject this week is Avenger who started it all, kicking off the MCU with a bang. With an eye to the movies and the highly-anticipated premiere of Avengers: Endgame this week, we’ll look for the mythological, historical, and philosophical roots of the man in the mechanized suit. With inspiration from Achilles, the Greek hero of the Trojan War and Homer’s Iliad, the mythology of automata like the Golem and Talos, we’ll also ask the difficult questions surrounding modern and mechanized warfare.

We lost some legends in the past few weeks, and in the wake of the monumental loss of Stan Lee, Derek & Laurel now tip their hats to the legacy of Marvel and in particular, the X-Men. Created in 1963 with the intent of promoting diversity and anti-bigotry, the X-Men comics, cartoon series, and films now stand as a rallying cry for the disenfranchised. This episode focuses on 2011’s X-Men: First Class, examining the complex relationships between characters that exist in marginalized groups, and the deeply relatable reasoning behind the birth of great villains like Mystique and Magneto in the series. With love, compassion, and harmony, we look to the example of Charles Xavier to navigate troubled times and give thanks for our communities and chosen families. Happy Thanksgiving from the Midnight Myth.

Warning: This episode completely spoils Marvel's the Infinity War!

In 2008, Tony Stark said the age old proverb that the best weapon is one you never have to fire, was wrong. He preferred the weapon you only have to fire once. That weapon is here, and it has 6 stones. The infinity gauntlet as arrived, and is being wielded by a purple skinned Titan— Thanos. Listen as Derek and Laurel do their heavy spoiler filled discussion on 10 years of build up in Marvel’s Infinity War.
